PUBLIC ADVISORY RMX-A-001 - This advisory records the Bureau’s determination on the playback of ripped audio through professional sound systems, so that wherever the question is asked, there is one answer of record. The answer is no.
Routing: Send/Return vs Insert
- Insert (between mixer master and processing/amps): The whole mix passes through the Unit. Simplest, and required if you want Scene FX / Isolate affecting the full program. Downside: the RMX is now a single point of failure - if it locks up or loses power, the room goes silent. Always know where the bypass is.
- Send/Return (mixer FX loop): Only the send signal is processed, blended back at the mixer. Safer for the system, but Isolate and X-Pad behavior changes since you're not processing the full program. Most club installs run insert on the master - with the sound tech's blessing, which is exactly why the sound tech gets a say in this document.
Why your levels clip when FX engage
Several effects add gain (Spiral Up, high-feedback Echo, Isolate boosts). If your mixer master is already near the top, engaging FX pushes you into the limiter or clipping. Fix: run the master 3-6dB below where you'd normally sit and let the house system handle loudness. If the meters are red before you touch the Unit, the Unit is not the problem.
Quantize and BPM lock
Quantize only works with a clean BPM. Tap it in or verify auto-BPM locked before relying on rhythm FX - a half-tempo or double-tempo mislock is why your roll sounds drunk. Re-tap on every track change if you're not trusting auto.
SD card and custom samples
The SD slot loads custom X-Pad samples via the remixbox editor. Format the card in the Unit, not in Finder/Explorer, to avoid read errors.
remixbox and firmware
remixbox (Pioneer DJ site) customizes FX parameters, X-Pad samples, and per-bank behavior. The Unit is discontinued - download and archive the installer and latest firmware now, because official support pages disappear. If a venue's unit is acting weird, firmware check is the first move.
Troubleshooting quick hits
- No audio through the Unit: Check bypass state first, then the input/output gain knobs on the rear - they get bumped in transit constantly.
- FX out of time: BPM mislock. Re-tap.
- Unit not recognized by remixbox: Different USB cable before anything else. It's always the cable.
- Crackling outputs: The rear RCA connections are the weak point. Reseat, carry spares.
